First the Yoga. Then the Things.

November 01, 2019

It is essential to put yourself at the top of your own priority list.

Let me say that again.

It is ESSENTIAL to put yourself at the TOP of your list.

Sound selfish to you? What if being selfish (putting yourself, your needs, your mental, physical and emotional well being first above all else) is precisely what it takes for you to be of any use to anyone or anything in your life?!?

I am at the top of my own list and I make no apology about it. I know that I will be much more valuable, impactful and precious to those around me when I keep myself firmly rooted there, in the #1 position.

When we’re at the top of our own priority list and we do the things that, even if it’s only for 15 minutes first thing in the morning, we know are good and right for us, we somehow magically move through the rest of our day just feeling better about ourselves — because we did what we really know is best and most right for us!

Then we know it’s done. We’ve done what we know to be good for us and now we’re off to an amazing start. We feel good about ourselves. We start the day on purpose, with an energy and attitude of power and possibility. We don’t have the sludgy thought train of guilt and disappointment following us around the rest of the day, that inner voice saying “I know what I should have done. Why didn’t I?”

Not a powerful position to play from.

So first, do your yoga (or whatever it is that you dig!). Do you.

Create your own list — if you don’t, somebody else will. (*And guess what, you will be at the bottom, because it’s their list!)

It’s really that simple. Pick up the pencil and begin.

#1. ME

The 'Right Way' is a Trap

October 06, 2019

I knew I needed a yoga practice today. I woke up knowing it. Before I pulled myself from the sheets, it was set as my priority - get on my mat. I rolled through my morning routine of warm water, face, teeth and all the rest of those bodily functions. I read a moving article in the Sun mag, an interview with Bill McKibben - on the climate disaster humans have created here on earth. All the while, my mat was calling me.

I knew I wanted a heated practice and some sweet tunes pumping in my ears. Our small guest bedroom is normally our yoga room, but right now, there's a queen sized bed in it. The excuses were there, a threat just on the other side of consciousness, ready to pounce if I gave them the slightest look. "Oh, the bed is in the way. It'll take too much time/effort/work to get the space ready. I could take the bed apart and move it out. Nope, too hard. Ew, the floors are dirty. Maybe I should just skip it."

Instead, I pushed the bed to the side of the room, grabbed the broom, gave it a 30 second sweep, cranked on the one heater I could access and rolled out my mat. I connected the bluetooth, pressed play on my chosen practice soundtrack and clicked the volume up loud.

A smile moved itself across my face. That smile expanded through my entire body as the promise of music and movement opened itself up to me and I to it. Before I took my first posture, I spent a few moments in joyful dance upon my mat. It was f***ing glorious. The smile grew, shining from the inside out. I still feel it rising up simply writing these words.

As I continued through my practice, singing and humming and grooving along with Mac, I laughed at how "un-yogic" my practice was turning out to be. Isn't yoga a quiet, introspective, serious affair? You don't listen to Mac Miller (on high volume) and do a yoga practice. That just isn't how it's done. That's not right.

Who says?

I say that - today - my yoga practice was one of the most fulfilling, inspiring, joyful ones I've had in quite some time. I let loose all of the rules, of the right way, of the rigidity and "have-to's". They have no place in my practice or in my life.

That thought began to thread its way out into other areas where I have decided not to do what they labeled as right. My babies were born at home, in the water. They breastfed for just as long as they damn-well pleased and slept in our bed until they decided they were ready for their own. We kept them home to learn and allowed them a strong voice in our family discussions and decisions. We bumped up against a whole lot of resistance and judgment because we weren't doing what was right. For many, our decisions were an extremely uncomfortable experience. Perhaps (and this is only a guess) because they forced them to look, long and hard, at their own. It's easier to point the finger of "YOU'RE WRONG" - than to turn the finger around and wonder what it is in their own lives that they know, in their deepest truth, is not right for them.

Remember that your right just may be yours, and yours alone. Actually, it absolutely will be. And that is ok. The right thing to do is what brings you to life, that explodes your heart with more peace. More joy. The job, the relationship, the house, whatever it is that someone else convinced you was right - may not be. Can you turn it around and look at it and get real with the choices you've made?

What's right for you, right now?

A scary question to ask, but the urgency of the answer deserves a moment of your time. This is your life, after all. You get only one shot. Make it count.

Yintensive® Yin Teacher Training and Student Immersion

August 12, 2019

Module I: Open to all. We are opening the first two and a half days to our students and community for those who would like a Yin immersion! People who love Yin, really love Yin. There are many benefits over the long term; greater flexibility, healthier joints, a deeper understanding of your body maybe resulting in better proprioception. That last one is especially important as we age. You will reap greater and greater rewards over the course of weeks and years doing a Yin practice. But what about today, like, right now? Yep, though Yin is about patience and abiding, its effects can be felt right away. If you’ve been attending Milidi’s Yin class on Monday evenings or are looking to expand your yoga knowledge and experience of your Yin yoga practice, this immersion is for you.

  • Module I/Student Immersion Schedule & Tuition:

    • Friday, November 8: 5:30pm-9:00pm

    • Saturday, November 9: 10:30am-5:30pm

    • Sunday, November 10: 9:00am-4:00pm

    • Tuition: $225

Module II: Yoga Instructors only: Yin is a highly therapeutic, meditative style that requires a wise and informed approach. To teach it well one has to know the philosophical theory that was its genesis and the anatomical and physiological protocol that makes it such a healing practice. So often we teachers regurgitate the rhetoric of our teachers but Yin is more than theory. Learn the science behind the “Yin tissues”. Discover the true and false of traditional strategies to make your teaching even stronger. Yintensive® Yin Teacher Training with Mandy is different. Curriculum nods to tradition but asks deeper questions about the purpose of Yin and how we can truly harness this modality to help our students on every level of being. Receive your 40 hour certificate upon successful completion of this unique and valuable training. For detailed information, please see Mandy’s Yintensive® Yin Teacher Training website.

  • Module I and II Teacher Training Schedule & Tuition:

ABOUT MIKE TAMBURO

Mike Tamburo has spent his life serving and exploring the power of music. His concerts and workshops are heart centered, uplifting, sonically multi-dimensional, life affirming experiences that focus on self transformation through conscious listening and breathing. He lives in deep gratitude and joy that his life of music has had meaning and been of use to the world around him. He seeks peace and harmony in his life and hopes to share this peace with others through his music and teachings.

Through extensive national tours both solo and with Crown of Eternity, Mike has offered countless workshops, classes, therapy sessions, concerts and retreats and has guided thousands of people to listen deeply, relax, reconnect to themselves and most importantly marvel at the power of sound.

Over the past 20+ years Mike Tamburo has become well known as a multi-instrumentalist, music educator, interdisciplinary sound artist, video artist, sound therapist, writer, meditation teacher and avid traveler; sharing over 1800 public and private performances and recording more than 65 albums of ecstatic and transcendental music as well as folk, drone, ambient and sometimes unclassifiable sounds.

Early in Tamburo's career he gained notoriety for his string playing (hammered dulcimer, guitar and shahi baaja). In many of his early performances he began to enter into altered states of consciousness and have out of body experiences while performing. In order to understand these experiences he went into years of self study; exploring Kundalini Yoga, energy work, the therapeutic use of sound and how sound effects consciousness, human perception and self healing. His love for long sustained drones, overtones and psychoacoustics led him to working with multiple gongs and other tuned metal instruments (bells, sound plates, singing bowls) as well as exploring the healing power of mantra and toning. Learn more at www.soundseternal.com

Ashtanga Yoga Course w/ Yorleny

January 29, 2019

Join Yorleny for this two month Ashtanga Yoga Course - Learn the FULL Primary Series and solidify your personal practice! Some experience required.

Connect with the deepest part of yourself. Get the tools to advance your personal practice at home and at the studio. Learn the Ashtanga Yoga system, which is a living lineage that dates back nearly five thousand years and that has reached millions of practitioners.

Ashtanga Yoga’s Vinyasa system is sequences of postures (usually called series) that vary in difficulty and benefit. There are three series: The Primary Series, which cleanses and tunes the physical body; The Intermediate Series, which purifies the nervous system; and the Advanced Series, which cultivates strength and grace. They are accomplished in a sequential manner, which tests the student’s discipline and commitment. The sequential process of learning Ashtanga allows the yogi to develop the concentration, strength, flexibility and stamina necessary to progress in a safe, balanced and optimal manner. The result of practicing this system is an open heart and a clear mind in a light and strong body.

If you are looking forward to becoming more consistent in your practice and look inward while practicing a method that helps you find health and happiness, come and learn with us the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. The Primary Series, Yoga Chikitsa, cleanses and tunes the physical body and it is where every Ashtanga practitioner starts. Poses can be modified and they can be made accessible for everybody. All you need is motivation and be committed.

When:

  • From February 21 to April 18, 2019.

  • Two classes a week: Sundays, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Close your eyes and you'll feel that you're right here in the practice room with us. Simply amazing. We'll be uploading class audio in the coming days, so be sure to check the calendar often.

Virtual audio attendance is available only to our Recurring Donors, those who are on a monthly recurring donation with us and have unlimited credits (all of our recurring donor members have unlimited credits). If you have questions about becoming a Recurring Donor, I invite you to reach out to me or any of our instructors. We would love to help get you started!

Gratefully yours ...

More GOAT YOGA!

November 20, 2018

We will once again join together with our baby goat friends from Old McDonald’s Farm to bring you another Goat Yoga class on Friday, December 7 at 6:00pm. If this class fills, we can add an additional class, immediately after (7:30pm). Get your tickets right away! They go quick.

This is a brand new experience for us here at Sōl and likely for many of you! We invite you to come experience this playful yet therapeutic hour in community with friends, family and four-leggeds. Expect to laugh, have fun and leave feeling JOY-FILLED!

What to know:

  • The goats will be free roaming the studio and you will interact with them. Expect to be crawled on, explored and otherwise loved up!

  • Baby goats don’t wear diapers. We will have helpers on hand to assist with the inevitable. With this understanding, please bring what you feel would best support you and your mat during class. We will have paper towels and cleaning spray available.

  • Sōl is not responsible for any personal or bodily damage nor health related reactions. Play at your own risk. :)

  • We are capping the class at 30 so that we have a good goat to human ratio. All ages and abilities are welcome to attend.

  • No refunds or make-up credits are available for this class. If you cannot attend, please find someone who can come in your place. Have them pay you and then let us know who it is.

  • COST:

    • $15 - Recurring Donors (those on a monthly membership with us)

    • $21.30 - Drop-In Students

    • $24.50 - Drop-In Students w/ Mat Rental

#GratefulSol Instagram Challenge 2018

November 13, 2018

Our annual #gratefulsol Instagram Challenge is underway! Are you in?!

Each year in November, we host a 10-day online #GRATEFULSŌL Instagram Challenge. Participating is easy and free and there will be PRIZES!! The prize packages this year include yoga mats and other gear, eye pillows, essential oils and yoga class passes! You definitely want to get in on this.

What to do:

1. Each day, post a photo of yourself on INSTAGRAM in that "pose of the day".
Day 1: triangle
Day 2: eagle
Day 3: dancer
Day 4: camel
Day 5: tree
Day 6: half moon
Day 7: warrior 2
Day 8: easy pose
Day 9: supine twist
Day 10: side angle

2. Tag your photo with the following tags:
#gratefulsol
#solgratitudechallenge2018
#soltribe
#rapidcityyoga
#iamyoga

3. Share a word of gratitude with your photo:
*Express your gratitude!
*When you spend time in the pose of the day, reflect on your grateful heart. Listen to what comes up. Share that.
*It can be as simple as "sunshine!" or "my warm bed". It can be one word or a phrase or a paragraph.

Science shows us that pausing to reflect on gratitude and share or express it in some way is truly good medicine for the body & soul! Please join us in this very important practice. When we set our intentions and energies on the things we love and are grateful for, they have a way of expanding. We all deserve that!

We look forward to sharing 10 days of deep gratitude with you and learning more about what makes you smile!
