From the Inside Out: Learning to Trust Your Own Knowing

October 20, 2026

There is a moment at the beginning of nearly every yoga practice when we are invited to become still.

Not because stillness is the goal, but because it gives us a chance to hear ourselves.

Before the movement begins, before we are balancing, stretching, strengthening, or flowing, we pause long enough to notice:

What is my body saying today?
What is asking for my attention?
What would it feel like to honor what I find?

This kind of listening can feel unfamiliar. We are so accustomed to looking outside ourselves for direction: watching what someone else is doing, wondering whether we are getting it “right,” or measuring our experience against someone else’s expression.

But yoga offers us another possibility.

What would it be like to create our expression from the inside out?

Ask Your Body

Throughout the practice, we return again and again to a simple question:

Dear body, what would you like me to do here? What would feel good?

And then we listen.

Sometimes the body asks us to soften. Sometimes it asks us to stay. Sometimes it surprises us by wanting to reach a little farther, try something unfamiliar, or discover what might be possible.

Listening to the body does not always mean choosing the easiest path. It means choosing the most honest one.

There may still be effort. There may still be challenge. There may even be shaking, burning, or wobbling. But instead of forcing the body into a predetermined shape, we stay in conversation with it.

We notice. We respond. We refine.

The pose becomes our own.

Go for It. Then Refine as Needed

There are moments in yoga, as in life, when we can spend so much time thinking about the next step that we never actually take it.

We wait to feel completely prepared. We wait until we understand exactly how something will unfold. We wait until we are certain we can do it beautifully.

And sometimes, we simply have to go for it.

See what happens. Refine as needed.

The willingness to begin imperfectly is its own kind of wisdom. We learn through the experience itself, not by standing at the edge, thinking about it forever.

Your first attempt may wobble. Your balance may be messy. You may discover that the direction you chose is not the one you want to continue traveling.

That is not failure. That is information.

You are learning yourself as you go.

Wobbles Are Welcome

Balance is not the absence of movement.

In a balancing posture, the body is making countless tiny adjustments. Muscles engage and release. The foot responds to the floor. The gaze shifts. We tip away from center and find our way back—sometimes gracefully, sometimes not.

This is what balance actually looks like.

The same is true beyond the mat. A balanced life does not mean that nothing ever shifts or unsettles us. It means we become more practiced at listening, adjusting, and returning.

We stop treating the wobble as evidence that we are doing something wrong.

We let ourselves be a little messy along the way.

Your Expression Is Yours

There is inspiration to be found in practicing alongside others. We witness courage, possibility, tenderness, strength, and playfulness in the people around us.

But inspiration is different from comparison.

Your Warrior does not need to look like anyone else’s. Your movement does not need to sound like anyone else’s. Your path does not need to unfold in the same way or at the same pace.

Thank goodness for that.

There is something deeply freeing about closing our eyes to the external feedback and asking what wants to emerge from within us.

Not: What should this look like?

But: What is true for me here?

This is the practice of self-trust—not believing that we will always know exactly what to do, but believing that we can stay present enough to listen, respond, and change course when needed.

Surrender and Receive

At the end of practice, after all the movement, effort, exploration, and wobbling, we become still once more.

We surrender everything.

And then we receive the practice.

Perhaps this is the rhythm we are learning: listening and responding, giving and receiving, reaching and resting, moving outward and returning home.

Again and again, the body reminds us that we already carry a quiet, intelligent knowing within us.

Our work is not to force it into speaking louder.

Our work is to become quiet enough to hear it.

And when we do, perhaps we can trust the nudge, take the next step, and let our lives become an expression generated from the inside out.

What would it be like to stop looking outside yourself for the “right” way and begin creating your life from the inside out? Yoga teaches us to listen, trust the nudge, and welcome a little messiness along the way.
